Rules & regulations
When you enter a team or play in our leagues, you're agreeing to these rules.
Scoring
2 points for a win, 1 for a draw, plus total sets won. Games run for 50 minutes, so the last set is often unfinished: an incomplete set where one team has reached at least 8 points counts 0.5 to the team ahead.
Every team must give us an email address and a mobile number for its contact person when it enters. If that person changes, please let us know.
Standard match play rules
Standard volleyball rules apply. The main ones to know when refereeing:
- A player can't touch the ball twice in a row (unless the first touch is a block).
- A block that touches the ball doesn't count as a team's first touch.
- It's a net foul if a player touches any part of the net during play (unless the opposition's ball pushes the net into the player).
- A player must not carry (catch and throw) the ball.
- The carry rule is relaxed for the first touch of a ball that comes over the net.
- Defenders can't block a player who is setting the ball on the other side of the net — unless that player is taking an attacking shot (one that would cross the net if not intercepted) or part of the ball has crossed the plane of the net.
- A ball that hits the line is in.
CCV local rules
- It's a foul if a player's whole foot is on or over the centre line. This modifies the usual rule to prevent nasty injuries at a social level.
- Sets are played to exactly 25 points — teams don't need to win by two.
- Games are played to time, so the last set is often unfinished.
- If the ball hits the roof and doesn't cross the net, play continues.
- Serves may be taken from inside the dotted line marked on the court.
- Games run for 50 minutes.
- Teams are encouraged to wear a team uniform, but since 2020 no uniform points are taken.
Participation
- A team that can't field at least four of its regular players technically defaults the game 3–0. In that case teams are encouraged to play a friendly with their available players and fill-ins. If your team needs to default, please contact Ann Fowler so she can let the court supervisor know.
- Teams using one or two (maximum) fill-in players to avoid a default must use players from the same grade or lower. A team using players from a higher grade can still play, but the court supervisor will record the game as a default.
- It's each team's responsibility to check the draw regularly and turn up on time for games and duties.
Fees
Every team must pay the entry fee before its entry is confirmed in the league. School and student players may receive a 50% discount at our discretion. Fees and how to pay →
Duty teams
Each team does a duty, on average every six weeks. A duty needs only three players, to referee and score one game each. Duties are in the draw, and we do our best to spread them evenly, so each player should only have to do a duty once in each 9–11-week round.
Teams that miss their duty may lose 3 competition points, and we reserve the right to remove a team from the league if duties are repeatedly missed.
Balls
Teams are expected to bring their own balls to warm up and play with.
Draws
Draws and results are posted regularly on the website. From time to time we need to change a draw because of unforeseen circumstances; when that happens, the new draw goes up on the website and we email your team's contact person.
If you have a genuine preference, let us know — but we can't always cater for preferences, and it isn't guaranteed.
Results
Results are posted on the website after each round. The scoring is 2 points for a win, 1 point for a draw, plus total sets won (an incomplete set where one team has reached at least 8 points counts 0.5). Draws, results and ladders →
Prizes
The team with the highest total score in each grade each term wins a new volleyball, delivered within a week or two of the end of the round.
Fair play
Please treat other teams and players with respect and courtesy — our leagues are about having fun! Teams that don't follow this very reasonable rule may be asked to leave the competition.
